A British passport can fail a Schengen trip before it expires
For a full British citizen passport, France and the other Schengen countries that publish the same rule require two checks. The date of issue must be less than 10 years before the date you arrive. The expiry date must be at least three months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. The expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue. If you renewed a British passport before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added, so the date of issue can already be more than 10 years before you travel while the passport still looks unexpired. This page is for that British citizen case. Other passports follow the rules of the country you are entering.

Check this trip in TripCheckAn unexpired passport can still fail
GOV.UK’s France entry advice says the authorities look at the date of issue, not only the expiry date. A passport issued on 1 January 2016 is 10 years old on 1 January 2026. Arriving on or after that anniversary means the date of issue is not less than 10 years before arrival, which is the test France publishes for the Schengen area. Months added on an old renewal do not move the date of issue forward.
The three-month check
The same GOV.UK advice says the expiry date must be at least three months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. Leaving on 10 June means the passport should be valid through at least 10 September. This is separate from the 10-year issue-date check. Both have to pass.
Check the dates in the passport
Use the date of issue and the expiry date printed in the passport, the day you arrive in the Schengen area, and the day you leave it. The calculator below applies only those two published tests. It does not decide visas, the 90-day stay limit, or whether a particular border officer will admit you. TripCheck’s trip validity checker is the place to keep the passport beside the actual trip dates.
