Six months of passport validity is not a universal rule
It depends on the country. There is no single rule that every border requires six months of passport validity. The US State Department says some destinations require a passport that is valid at least six months beyond the dates of your trip, and some airlines will refuse boarding when that requirement is not met. Other countries use a different test. For many short stays in the Schengen area, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office describes a passport that was issued less than 10 years before you arrive and that remains valid at least three months after the day you plan to leave. Check the official travel advice for the country you are entering before you book.

Check this trip in TripCheckWhere a six-month rule applies
Where a destination applies a six-month rule, the passport should still be valid for six months after your trip, not merely on the day you land. The US State Department tells travelers to check the travel advisory for each place they plan to visit, because the period is set by that destination. An airline can apply the same check at the gate, so a passport that looks valid for the flight date can still be a problem if it expires too soon afterwards.
Schengen trips use a different period
Schengen countries such as France do not use the six-month test for the usual short stay described on GOV.UK. France follows Schengen area rules: a full British citizen passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years before the date you arrive, and an expiry date at least three months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area. The expiry date does not need to fall within 10 years of the date of issue. The US State Department likewise tells US travelers that a passport for Schengen travel must be valid for at least three months beyond the planned departure from the EU.
That is why a blanket answer of “yes, always six months” is wrong. The useful question is which rule the destination you are actually entering publishes for your nationality and the length of your stay.
How TripCheck uses the dates
TripCheck’s trip validity checker compares the documents you store with the dates and destination of a specific trip, so the check is about that journey rather than the expiry date alone. The AI visa checker and compliance advisor add orientation for a passport and destination. They are guidance. The border authority and your airline decide whether you travel.
